Fishing Therapy – 5 reasons why you should be fishing for better mental health during this global pandemic!

It’s a strange time. Emotions are high and social interaction is low, but under new lockdown rules we’re officially allowed into the great outdoors!

It goes without saying that we’re not out of the water yet (if you’ll pardon the pun) but at least outdoor sports have finally been given the green light. Abiding by social distancing measures goes without saying, but this seems like the break we’ve all needed… We can finally get ourselves down to the river and enjoy some headspace.

Not sure how fishing could help your current mental state? Well let us break it down for you:

Aaahhh silence
You wake up and – ouch – there’s a screech coming from your phone. You’re at school/ work and you’re overrun with constant chatter. Even when relaxing at home there’s an electric box nattering at you. We can no longer just enjoy silence. This constant commotion is a huge cause of anxiety! Fishing allows us to take a step back from it all and to just listen to nature, you can switch your brain off and enjoy the peace and quiet.

An excuse to be social
If on the other hand you want nothing more than to be surrounded by friends and family and enjoy a bit of banter on the bank then fishing with someone within your government prescribed bubble, is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors together. After all, friends offer support and that support helps us to feel mentally stronger as well as inducing those feel-good endorphins.

Exercise
There are numerous pieces of writing that explain the link between exercise and cognitive function. The correct dose of exercise can often be the best medicine, having healthy joints and bones is just a bi-product of the mental aid it can offer. Lockdown has been tough for us all, but if your work and family schedules allow then fishing could be the safety blanket your brain requires during this uncertain time. Plus, spodding is great exercise for your biceps which you need when you’re hauling in chunks!

Want a brain as sharp as your fishing hook?
Fishing encourages our brain to work at a slightly higher capacity. It requires all our senses and of course is a sport at which we can constantly learn and improve. A UCL study highlights the correlation between learning and mental health, it underlines that learning can solidify confidence and sense of achievement. This is particularly good for young people and women who can sometimes lack self-confidence.

Relaxation

Whether you enjoy the odd fishing trip or are an avid angler you can appreciate how calming it feels to be outside. When fishing you must be both present and mindful, this combined with the sounds of nature helps to push stress far from the mind. Stress can be numbing, it can tear the mind apart; but the sound of water rippling slowly alleviates it, relaxes the muscles and is truly a tranquil pleasure.

At Taylors Lead Lounge we want to make sure you can relax and unwind. Not only do we offer a Platinum rated service but also an array of essential kit including one of the largest assortments of leads on the market, carp-attracting hookbaits, glugs, PVA and terminal tackle. All of this is at the tip of your fingers and can be ordered on the bankside via our mobile-friendly, secure website.

TRUSTED. VALUE. DELIVERED.

So go on, go fishing and ensure your brain stays active, sharp and healthy!
